This reference to Swift’s lover as her reason for breathing is echoed in the Midnights (3am Edition) bonus track Paris : “I’m so in love that I might stop breathing.” Both references point to her lover’s place in Swift’s life being central to her. Their relationship is like breathing in that it’s not a passing fad. It’s necessary for survival, and it’s a much more essential feeling than getting caught up in a feeling. Breathing is constant through someone’s whole life, so she’s saying she’s going to love him for the rest of her life.
