Popular fashion brand Christian Louboutin makes shoes with a signature red sole. The brand is widely credited with reviving the sexy stiletto silhouette by implementing exotic skins, luxe fur, and heavy embellishments to produce standout footwear. As seen in the visuals for the song, Cardi wears red bottom heels and then makes a connection between the signature red sole and her image of an aggressive MC, killing the competition and getting the blood on her shoes. “Bloody shoes” may also be a thinly veiled allusion to the Blood gang—Cardi has displayed affiliation in songs like “Red Barz” and publicly announced she was a member of the gang since she was 16 years old. On December 17th, Pitchfork named this line one of the fifteen year-defining lyrics of 2017. In season six of Love & Hip Hop: New York , a reality show Cardi starred in for seasons six and seven, Cardi threw a red Gucci heel at Asia for the latter’s inadequate explanation for not liking Cardi. This event can be seen in the same way as the music video of her “killing the competition.”
