In her “Self-Titled” mini documentary released on YouTube , Bey explained the genesis of the song: So there was this new producer, Detail , and he had this really hard beat, and he had this song called “Drunk,” and I’m like ‘that’s what I wanna sing!’ Bey said recording process had an organic, just-having-fun feel to it; she freestyled her verse before Jay Z arrived to the studio and did the same with his. Then Timbaland arrived and added another layer of drum kicks as an additional touch. In late 2014, Hungarian singer Ando Drom sued Beyoncé, Jay Z and co-producer Timbaland , claiming they illegally sampled her track, “Bajba Bajba” for “Drunk in Love”’s intro. There has been no update on the status of the pending court case. Others speculate that the “sample” actually came from EastWest’s Voices of Passion VST, which features distinct Hungarian vocals that sound similar to those used in the intro.
