“Hold up” is one of many non-lexicals Jay uses as his signature throughout his music. Another that he is more famous for is the “Uh,” which he says numerous times in Holy Grail . Listening to his catalog of songs, you’ll hear different versions of this on multiple songs, be it the “Ugh ugh” that he used early in his career that’s rumored to have been taken from Biggie , to the “Yessss!” used in later songs. “Hold up” recently popped up in “Tom Ford” and continues to be used in Jay’s songs, possibly as a nod to his wife’s home state, where the phrase originated.
