In his 1984 song strong I Would Die 4 U from the album Purple Rain , Prince talks about being a girl’s Messiah. His love for her is unconditional, godly-like. From a biblical point of view, this would mean taking on this girl’s sins, just like Jesus died on the cross for his people. Jean 15:13 « Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends ». In the The Weeknd song You give me strength written for the Avatar’s movie soundtrack, Abel talks about a failed attempt to protect someone from paying for HIS sins. Now that the roles have reversed, The Weeknd is the one who will carry the sins of this person as he/she has probably died since. Because this remix is a duet with Ariana Grande, we can understand that a Messiah can be a woman or a man, the main focus here is loving someone like he is our religion, regardless of anything that this person has committed or is going through. Prince himself sings in strong I Would Die 4 U « I’m not a woman, I’m not a man » but also « And if you’re evil I’ll forgive you by and by ». In the context of art and creation, this would mean dying in order to create a piece of art, beautiful enough and perfectly tailored to make the heart of the person we love, beat again. Bringing this person back to life is what The Weeknd is trying to do with this remix.
