What is the meaning behind “I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word”?

This could reference a number of events; one being the Biblical account of Moses parting the sea, or the absolute power held by the likes of Louis XIV . Viva La Vida or Death and All his Friends ‘ cover infamously depicts Eugène Delacroix ’s “Liberty Leading the People” , a painting of freedom fighters during the 1830 July Revolution against Charles X, another French monarch. The narrator used to have immense power, but it has since been lost and he is reminiscing with nostalgia. He had access to everything this world has to offer. PROPOSED SUGGESTION: It could be referring to the apocryphal story of King Cnut and the Tide. Cnut the Great (also known in English as Canute, and in his native Old Norse as Knútr) was king of Denmark, England and Norway in the 11th century. the story goes that he was annoyed with the flattery that his courtiers showed him, and decided to demonstrate the fact that even his power was limited. To do this he went down to the beach and commanded the tide to come and the sea to rise. Nothing happened, of course, and his point was proven.
