Within the song’s narrative, Rihanna reminds her partner of all the faith she put into him and his dreams. In return, Rihanna had everything taken from her; the love she gave him was cast aside and the patience she needed to keep their relationship strong through tough times was spent. Keys allow you to do things, they open doors and start cars. Rihanna’s suggestion that hers were taken implies that she enabled her companion’s lifestyle without receiving the benefits of the love she yearned for. Such one-sided relationships are also discussed in other ANTI songs such as “Love On The Brain.” These lines could also be seen as showcasing Rihanna’s love for her fans. In 2015, RiRi and Samsung launched AntiDiaRy, a sort of dynamic experience where the “Keyholder”, a spooky Instagram account, released clues. These included references to ANTI and the accompanying world tour being “the ultimate dream,” whilst fans tiring of the four-year wait for its release were told that “patience is the key.” Some fans were also given ornate golden keys with 5-digit codes inscribed on them, which unlocked two tickets to a Rihanna concert.
