The chains Travis has on his neck are as tight as a choker , and he claims that “crackers”—a derogatory term for white people–would rather see him with a rope around his neck. A noose is a rope with a running knot, most commonly associated with capital punishment by hanging. In the late 19th and early 20th century, many African-Americans were lynched by mobs of white Americans.
