Abel references the $1.2 million McLaren P1, a car he was spotted driving earlier in 2016. It seems to be the same car he recieved as a gift during his post-Grammy party. Abel casually drops the outrageous price tag on the listener “just to” hurt us and leave a sting of jealousy as he continues to flex throughout the song. “P1” can also refer to P1 cocaine, creating further wordplay. Named after an English gang that smuggled it, P1 is thought to be very pure, or “clean.” The Weeknd is known for his love of cocaine, talking about it later on in this very song. Churches is an English brand famous for high-end shoes, but the line also plays on the common practice to wear your cleanest and nicest clothing when you go to attend church.
