“Man-man” is one of the nicknames Kendrick’s parents gave him because he was mature at a young age. K. Dot is referencing Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. It started in 1934, showcasing amateur entertainers including singers, rappers and comedians. If the amateur act was performing poorly and getting booed, then the ‘Sandman’ would come out and escort him or her offstage. Amateur Night was first broadcast on television in 1987 as Showtime At The Apollo. The original Sandman was known as ‘the executioner’ and was portrayed by Howard Sims, a tap dancer who sprinkled sand on the ground to alter the sounds of his dance steps. He was employed at the Apollo Theater and used various methods to remove bad acts from the stage—sometimes he’d chase them off with a broom or use a large hook to pull them away. Interestingly, Kendrick is known for bringing fans on stage to perform with him. He has done his own Sandman impression before.
